City pass or separate tickets: which actually costs less?

Begin with the trip you would take without a pass

Write down the attractions the party already wants to visit, the official price for the correct date and age band, and any required booking fee. Leave out places added only to make a pass look valuable. The sum of that honest list is the separate-ticket baseline.

Now place those attractions on a map and a calendar. Opening hours, timed entry, travel between neighborhoods, meals, naps, weather, and ordinary fatigue decide how much can fit. A pass cannot create usable hours.

• Include taxes and mandatory booking fees on both sides
• Count only attractions the party genuinely intends to visit
• Check closures and reservation availability before purchasing

A day-based pass is an itinerary test

An all-inclusive pass generally offers access to included attractions for a chosen run of days. Divide the pass total by the number of usable sightseeing days, then ask whether each day contains enough planned, available visits to clear that cost without turning the trip into a race.

Use calendar days rather than an imagined bank of 24-hour periods unless the live terms clearly say otherwise. Starting late in the day can consume value quickly. A comfortable itinerary with one major attraction and time to wander may be better served by separate tickets even when a very aggressive schedule could beat the pass price.

A choice-based pass is a shortlist test

A choice-based or explorer pass is easier to compare: select the number of attractions, then price the same shortlist separately. Go City currently says its Explorer Pass allows the remaining choices to be used within 30 days after the first scan, but the current destination page and pass terms control.

Do not assume every included attraction is interchangeable. Premium experiences, special exhibits, transport, or reservations may have different rules. The pass wins only when it covers the exact versions you intend to book.

Reservations and activation change the risk

Some included attractions require advance reservations. Check availability before buying when one or two must-see entries are carrying most of the pass value. A pass with no workable time slot is not a bargain.

Go City's current terms say purchases made on or after May 1, 2026 may be cancelled within 90 days only if the pass has not been activated or used. The terms also warn that making a reservation for certain attractions may activate the pass. Read the live cancellation and activation rules before reserving anything; syncing a pass to the Go City app alone does not activate it according to the current how-it-works page.

Family math is about pace as much as age bands

Run the comparison for the whole party. Child prices, age definitions, free admission at individual attractions, stroller rules, and the time a family can comfortably remain out all affect the result. An attraction that is free for a young child may still occupy one of the family's limited time slots.

Build the schedule around the slowest realistic day, not the most efficient adult itinerary. A pass that saves twenty dollars but requires skipping naps, crossing the city twice, or keeping an overtired child out late has not necessarily improved the trip.

Use a margin, not a tie

If the pass and separate tickets are nearly equal, separate tickets preserve more freedom. A pass should lead by enough to absorb one missed attraction, a changed day, or a reservation that no longer works. Ten percent is a useful caution line, not a universal rule: below it, flexibility often matters more than a narrow paper advantage.
