Rakuten + Amex points: how it actually works

The simple version

Rakuten earns a commission when you begin an eligible purchase through its site, app, or browser extension. It shares part of that commission with you as cash back. Eligible members can choose Membership Rewards points as the payout method instead.

A store showing 8% cash back will generally appear as 8X when your account is set to Membership Rewards. That makes the decision a value comparison: the certain cash amount versus what you can realistically get from the points.

What you need

You need a Rakuten account and a qualifying U.S. American Express card that earns Membership Rewards. In Rakuten account settings, choose Membership Rewards as the payment method and link the eligible account.

Eligibility and account-linking rules can change. Confirm them inside your own Rakuten and Amex accounts before relying on the setup.

• Use the exact Rakuten account that is linked to Amex.
• Start with an empty cart when practical.
• Read the merchant exclusions before checkout.
• Keep the order confirmation until the earning is confirmed.

When the points are paid

Rakuten says confirmed Membership Rewards earnings are transferred every three months. The published payment dates are February 15, May 15, August 15, and November 15. Purchases still marked pending, returns, and excluded items may not be included in the next transfer.

Points or cash back?

Choose cash if you prefer a guaranteed, flexible return or typically redeem Membership Rewards at a low value. Choose points only if you have a credible use that beats the cash alternative after accounting for award availability, taxes, and your time.

The pre-purchase check

Activate Rakuten, confirm the merchant rate and exclusions, add any eligible Amex Offer to the card you will use, and save proof. A portal and a card-linked offer may stack because they track different parts of the purchase, but each offer's terms control.
