Why stacking can work
A portal reward and a card-linked offer are separate layers. Rakuten needs the shopping trip to begin through its tracked link. Amex requires you to add the offer before purchase and pay with the same eligible card. Neither layer guarantees the other.
The order that prevents mistakes
First, read the Amex Offer terms and add it to the card you intend to use. Second, check Rakuten's merchant exclusions. Third, begin a fresh Rakuten shopping trip, finish checkout in the same session, and pay with the enrolled card.
- Add the Amex Offer before buying.
- Confirm dates, minimum spend, geography, and eligible channels.
- Avoid unlisted coupon codes; they can invalidate portal earnings.
- Screenshot the activated portal rate and save the receipt.
The split-payment trap
Gift cards, buy-now-pay-later services, mobile wallets, and split tenders can change how the merchant or card issuer codes a purchase. If the Amex Offer requires one transaction or a direct merchant charge, use the simplest payment path that meets those terms.
Returns change the math
A return can reduce or reverse either reward. Never count pending portal earnings or an expected statement credit as final savings, and do not buy something merely to trigger a benefit.
